Fun Finds

I've been finding all kinds of interesting things at the camp. Some are useful and some are just junk, I suppose, but all tell some kind of story.

Yesterday I decided to video the contents of a run-down lean-to so you could see the interesting things in it, but I accidentally had my camera set on slo-mo so what should have been a 30 second video turned out to be 5 minutes. I did get a video of a dump pile, which turned up nothing. It was hard to walk through and video at the same time. It will be easier to explore in the winter when the vines and weeds aren't growing over everything and I'm not wondering what's lurking in there, ready to bite me. I came out with only one tick and I don't think any poison ivy.

I've been posting things I've found on Facebook, but I know not all of you are on Facebook so I decided to share them here too. Some of the things I found are in the woods, but most are things we've found in sheds, storage buildings or one of the buildings that was lived or worked in.

This next one isn't really a "find", I guess, but it was something I discovered could be used as something else.

There are 4 buildings that were the original barracks that were built by the Civilian Conservation Corp back in the 1930's. We're told they're the best remaining example of a CCC camp in the country. Most have been torn down. Much of this place is still intact and in relatively good shape.

Two of the buildings still look like the barracks probably looked back then. The other two have additional walls added for offices or classrooms.

The bunk beds are very heavy steel and they're bolted to the floors. I removed the top of one of the bunk beds I found in another building and welded it onto some steel legs I found in a shed and made a welding table. As you can see, I've already made a mess of it. I love my new table.

We have some cousins visiting this week and staying in an RV at Thunder BRidge but we still have a long way to go before we're ready for campers with higher expectations :) It's their first visit and I think they're enjoying exploring the area. Yesterday we climbed the Devil's Marbleyard and James and his cousin jumped in the Straw Pond afterward.

It's always fun showing guests around Rockbridge County. It reminds us of how lucky we are to live in such a beautiful place.

Did James warn Tim about the temp? I love that pond. I bet Tim and Cindy are having a great time.

We weren't going to warn him but he asked. We're having a great time with them. They're doing lots of exploring on their own too.
